Aerial Photography and Drone Video for Archaeological Recording

In the autumn of 2017, we were tasked with assisting in the recording of the discovery of a Roman Cemetery in the outskirts of Coventry, using aerial photography and drone video. Preliminary excavations for a new business park had unearthed 2500-year-old Roman burial urns and a chest as well as possibly the site of burning.

Archaeology Warwickshire required aerial views of the site in photography and video formats on the ground and in the air to record the site for the future press release at a later date when the site work had been completed. Over the years we have worked with Archaeology Warwickshire on a number of sites building up a relationship where we can be relied upon to keep their discoveries confidential until they have made official press releases.

Aerial Photography and Drone Video

This site is actually right next to the old compound for the works area when the A45 Tollbar Junction has upgraded a few years ago by Galliford Try we did the aerial progress photographs for that project over three years.

The real surprise here was that these urns were found just a few feet under the surface which amazing that they have survived intact considering the Coventry Blitz in World War 2 and all of the construction work that has gone on in the area, this site is right next to the airport that was heavily bombed in the war.

The proximity to the airport was interesting because from our previous work on the toll bar project we already had the phone number for air traffic control to allow us to gain permission to fly so close to the airport in controlled airspace.  We have been flying drones commercially for seven years now, identifying safety concerns such as these are second nature to us, for each and every job we will research the site in advance through a method statement and only commit to flying on the day once all safety concerns have been answered.

Interactive Golf Course Virtual Tour

We have created a new type of Interactive Golf Course Virtual Tour virtual tour that seamlessly uses video footage and 360 stills photography. To give the user a complete overview of the golf course, video fly-throughs and visualisation of each tee and green in 360 views.

Our Approach to Golf Course Virtual Tour

The tour is a hybrid between a traditional 360 virtual tour using stills photography and a video tour.

With the addition of video footage, we have created a golf balls-eye view video fly-through of each fairway from the tee to the green. These videos allow the user to visualise the golf balls trajectory from the tee through to the green. In each video the camera starts low then rises up to a low altitude to hug the fairway passing close to trees to end on the next green. The videos can be paused or rerun to get a firm feel for length and obstacles of each fairway. Additionally, the client the Ardencote in Warwickshire requested the video be speeded up to further imitate the speed of a flying golf ball.

An Easy to use Golf Course Virtual Tour

Using our video-enabled drone we were able to take the overview image. This acts as a course map for the user to navigate through the tour. From this high vantage point, the user can see where each fairway is and where all the tees and greens are located. In this instance, it also shows the extent of the hotel grounds and buildings which can be useful for navigation the hotel in general not just from a golfing perspective.

Moving down to tee level the user has a complete 360 view of the tee, to establish the lay of the land for when they come to visit the course in real life.

The camera can be panned in any direction from a central viewpoint. Also at this point, the user can press the video button to watch the balls-eye view up to the new green or click straight through to the green or using the course map button return to the overview image of the entire course.

This golf course virtual tour has been designed to be easy to use and understand be using the course overview image as the menu for the user to navigate between holes or to simply fly down to course level. Once inside the tour, the user can move through the entire course that way. If the user wishes to fly go back they simply need to press the course map button.

360 Virtual Tours

360 Virtual Tour for Market Hall Museum Warwick, Warwickshire

From Summer 2015 until Spring 2016, we were tasked with creating progress photographs of the transformation of Warwickshire County Museum in Warwick. The museum was completely refurbished inside and out, with new pointing on the outside plus stone repairs and a completely new layout and cafe on the inside.

With all of this work done naturally Heritage and Culture Warwickshire wanted to show this work off with a 360 virtual tour.
